W.E. Hill and Sons dominated the English-speaking violin world from the late nineteenth century through to the second half of the twentieth. As well as having a renowned level of expertise, they became famous for their violins and for their bows, which were ranked into four distinct tiers. This bow is an outstanding example of their second-level bows, stamped “W.E.H &S”. An additional stamp “5” on the silver tip face, identifies it as the work of Arthur John Barnes. It has a strong, stiff stick and an exceptional ability to cling to the string, remaining steady even in very fast, long legato strokes. The tone it produces is bright and responsive, with a very clean and articulate attack. As such, it will suit an outgoing, experienced player.
